About
The Rail Service Passenger Act created Amtrak in October
1970.
Amtrak, the privately owned National Passenger Rail Corporation, began
providing intercity passenger service on May 1, 1971. The Federal government
owns all of Amtrak’s stock and provides funds to support the system. Amtrak
is the sole available source of intercity train travel as the only franchise
operator. Amtrak intercity
passenger service ridership is the indicator.
Amtrak services Florida with five long distance trains. These
include the Silver Meteor, the Silver Star, the Silver Palmetto, the Sunset
Limited, and the Auto Train. For detailed schedules and locations one can visit
the Amtrak website at http://www.amtrak.com.
